Cressida Pryor

FOI Summer Solstice letter 2019

Dear Friends,

In the British Isles we have been caught in a weather system that has ensured low temperatures and rain for the past weeks...a reminder of how climate change will cause extreme weather changes for the entire globe...we see our inherent fragility amidst soggy grass and grey skies.

Fairly recently I have begun to attend life classes...which is the euphemism for describing the practice of drawing the naked human body...I feel it’s the musical equivalent of playing scales and arpeggios for the pianist for someone who draws. The human form is beautiful in all ages, shapes, genders and abilities. When the model steps up for the agreed period of time, disrobes and assumes a position a hush descends that is akin to that in prayer or sacred ritual. In their naked fragility there is also an unspoken awareness that we, the drawers are in their thrall...eager to capture a particular angle, curve of line or interrelationship. There is a timelessness that is disrupted when the designated buzzer of ‘times up’ is announced. The experience is humbling, often frustrating and in equal part exhilarating...

Why does this come to my mind now as we approach the Summer Solstice? We are all in relationship with this beautiful planet and Mother Nature who sustains life on it...held in her thrall as we reach light’s fullness, fledglings launching into independent life and the interconnected chain of being is fulfilled. And Solstice time is called so we must begin the slow descent into darkness again, into the frustrations of the shadow but knowing that without it we are not complete.

Blessed Isis hold us in our fragile being
May we feel your protection
Trusting that where we are is exactly where we are meant to be
So may we, your children find our souls singing and dancing
Within the Beauty of Eternal Truth.
May we tread lightly and simply to honour all.

So may it be, amen.

Cressida, FOI Steward
